The Department of Statistics and Operations Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has an opening for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level starting July 1, 2025.

 

The department is seeking candidates with a doctorate (or foreign equivalent) in statistics, operations research, industrial and systems engineering, or a related field. The ideal candidate would have strong methodological training in statistics and/or operations research and have application interests in areas such as cybersecurity, forensic science, ethical artificial intelligence, responsible machine learning, social good and fairness or other related domains. Candidates are expected to highlight the connection between their research and their application focus in their cover letters. Duties of this position include teaching, research, and service. The hired candidate will be expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels at the intersection of their expertise and the needs of the department.

 

We will begin considering candidates after November 1, 2024, and will continue accepting applications until the position is filled. This position is part of a cluster hire at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that also involves positions in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Philosophy. Although this position is housed fully in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, the ideal candidate will have research and/or teaching interests that make substantive connections with related fields and would be excited to engage in cross-disciplinary conversations and collaborations.
