Data science outreach partnership with the North Carolina School of Science and Math

Abstract: The North Carolina School of Science and Math is a two-year public high school for residents of North Carolina that focuses intensively on science, mathematics, and technology. Taylor Gibson, NCSSM’s Dean of Data Science and Interdisciplinary Initiatives, will join us for an information and discussion session about data science outreach initiatives at NCSSM and opportunities for collaboration with STOR on these efforts. Broadly, data science outreach refers to efforts to bring education in data science subjects (e.g. statistics, machine learning, optimization) to individuals with less access to these topics and fewer educational opportunities. Graduate students in STOR have been interested in student-led outreach initiatives and are working to organize regular outreach activities under the formal student organization, STOR Data Science Outreach Program for Students. Collaborating with NCSSM is an exciting step towards building community relationships and reaching students. PhD/Masters students and faculty are encouraged to join this discussion to learn more and get involved!
