Bhamidi selected as a Chern Professor
February 26, 2025
Our STOR faculty, Professor Shankar Bhamidi, has been selected as a Chern Professor for the program Probability and Statistics of Discrete Structures, which takes place from January 21, 2025 to May 16, 2025 at the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) in Berkeley, California.
The Chern Professorship is named for Shiing-Shen Chern, a towering figure in mathematics and founder of MSRI, and was established through the generosity of his children, May Chu and Paul Chern, and his longtime collaborator Jim Simons. Shiing-Shen Chern (1911–2004) was widely regarded as a leader of modern differential geometry who devised the Chern characteristic classes in fibre spaces. He also made fundamental contributions to complex algebraic geometry.
