STOR seniors Spencer Siegel, Dan Barlow and James Bury have recently made presentations at two sports analytics conferences. They traveled to Denver, CO, for the Rocky Mountain Symposium on Analytics in Sports, where they presented a talk entitled "Hierarchical Modeling to Predict Shot Outcome in NBA Games.” This presentation garnered the team a special award, as the only student presenters, graduate or undergraduate, at the day-long conference.

Following that, they traveled to Cambridge, MA, to present the same material as a poster at the New England Symposium on Statistics in Sports, held at Harvard University. Both talks were based on material that was originally a class project in Shankar Bhamidi’s Machine Learning class, then continued over the summer with Richard Smith as faculty advisor.
